Vincennes University men's basketball tops Smith and Street preseason poll

VINCENNES, Ind. - Smith and Street released its men’s college basketball preview magazine this week and defending Division I national champion Vincennes University is No. 1 in the NJCAA preseason poll.

Along with the preseason poll Smith and Street released their preseason All-American watch list for the 2019-20 season which includes sophomore Kevin Osawe (Third Team) and Craig Porter (Fifth Team).

Also listed in the polls is Region 24 rival John A. Logan College who came in at No. 3 and Nov. 24 Harcum College. VU plays Harcum on Nov. 2 as part of the Kiwanis Classic. VU will take on John A. Logan in Carterville, Ill. on Nov. 26 and in the P.E. Complex on Feb. 1.

Osawe is a returning forward from Brampton, Ontario and was the 2019 NJCAA National Championship Tournament MVP. He averaged 11.5 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game last season after returning from injury.

Porter is a returning guard from Terre Haute, Ind. and made a massive impact in his first season with the Trailblazers. He started in 27 of 36 games and averaged 8.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Porter also led the Blazers with 72 blocks and was only one assist behind the team leader Keith Clemons, now playing at Loyola University Chicago with 182.

VU is returning nine players from last season’s national championship team. They include Osawe and Porter as well as; Chuka Mekkam (Portland, Ore.), Michael Rogers (Evansville, Ind.), Colton Sandage (Bloomington, Ill.), Chinedu Okanu (Gary, Ind.), Lukanda Teziggwa (Woodend, Victoria, Australia), Kevin Kone (Osny, France), and Randy Tucker (Rock Island, Ill.), who redshirted last season.

The Trailblazers will host the 2019 Vincennes Jamboree on Oct. 13. VU opens the regular season at home with the Kiwanis Classic when it takes on Southwest Tennessee on Nov. 1 and No. 24 Harcum on Nov. 2.
